Maize Chlorotic Mottle Virus Detection

Maize Chlorotic Mottle VirusMaize chlorotic mottle virus (MCMV) is a Machlomovirus (its only representative) that can cause stunting, chlorotic stripes, and leaf necrosis in corn. MCMV is a major concern to corn producers because of its contribution to Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease (MLND). African corn growing regions, where food production is vital, have been devastated by the disease since 2011 after its first description in Kenya.

MLND is caused when corn is co-infected with MCMV and a Potyvirus such as Sugarcane mosaic virus (ScMV). The viruses are vectored by insects as maize thrips, rootworms and leaf beetles.

To help maize producers in disease control and management, it is necessary to have rapid, accurate and cost effective diagnostic tools allowing to detect the virus.
